Get started

inseam connects your devices and your data into one network. You search across all of it from one place, and your AI agents can too. Your files stay where they are. Only a search index and the addresses of your files are kept in your network.

This page takes you from nothing to your first search in about ten minutes.

Open app.inseam.io and choose Sign in. Type your email address and open the link in the email from hello@inseam.io. There is no password.

The first time you sign in, create a network. A network is your own space: your devices, your data and your index. It starts with a pad, a place for notes and files that is ready to use at once.

The inseam app lives in the menu bar. It keeps the folders you choose searchable.

  1. Open the app. Click the inseam icon in the menu bar and choose Connect this Mac.
  2. The app shows a short code and opens a page in your browser. Sign in if asked, pick your network and approve. The app connects by itself.
  3. Choose Add folder… and pick a folder, for example Documents or Notes.

The app reads each file once, keeps a short text summary in your network’s index and watches the folder for changes. The files never leave the Mac. When the Mac is asleep, the files stay searchable. Their contents are available again when it wakes.

Folders you add from a Mac are private: only you can search them, until you share them.

If you prefer a terminal, the command line does the same thing. The full details for the app are in connect your Mac.

Type in the search box in the app or on app.inseam.io. Results come from everything in your network, in one list. Each result shows the title, where the file is (its address) and a short extract. Click a result on a Mac to show the file in the Finder.

An address looks like this:

inseam://n7q2k3m4p5r6s7t8/h1a2b3c4d5e6/Notes/plan.md

It names the network, the host (here, a folder on your Mac) and the path. It stays the same when the index is rebuilt, and it keeps working for a while after you move or delete the file.

Your network’s pad takes notes and files from the web page, from the API and from agents. A note is searchable as soon as it is saved.

Agents reach your network through one address: https://app.inseam.io/mcp. The Connect page in the app shows the exact steps for Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor and command-line agents.

The first time an agent connects, your browser opens a page that asks what the agent may do: search, read, and whether it may write. You choose which hosts it sees and for how long. The agent keeps its own notes in a folder on your pad, so it has a memory from its first call.

You can also create an API token in the app and paste it into any tool that speaks the REST API. See connect an agent.

By default inseam indexes files changed in the last year, skips folders such as node_modules, .git, caches and build output, and skips file types that are not worth searching (logs, databases, binaries). Files over 25 MB are listed by name only. You change this per folder with its scope: see choose what is indexed.

The free plan indexes up to 25,000 items and includes 1 GB on the pad. The paid plan raises that to 500,000 items and 50 GB. Over the limit, new items wait; search and existing items keep working. See plans and billing.
